Nisland is located 16 miles east of Belle Fourche with a population of about 204. The community is in the Mountain Standard time zone. There is a fire and rescue department with several active members.

History

The community was named for Nis Sorensen. On October 29, 1910, the citizens voted to incorporate their town. The vote was thirty-seven for incorporation with no votes against it. Nisland blossomed into a busy community. Nisland was the hub of the only irrigated county in South Dakota at the time.

Recreation / Community Events

The Butte/Lawrence Co. Fairgrounds in Nisland, South Dakota, was added to the National Registrar of Historic Places in 1986 based on unique architectural features and the role it has played over the past 85 years. The grounds includes an octagonal-shaped Pavilion, food court, rodeo arena, livestock barns and a racetrack.
