As a town of 2,300 people, Hartford offers the feel of the small community with the excellent benefits of the city of Sioux Falls within a 10 mile commute.

History

The boundary lines of Hartford Township were surveyed and subdivided originally in 1867. ? But in 1879, two passengers traveling on train from Hartford, Connecticut, renamed the depot “Hartford.? A post office was established in 1881 with A.F. Oaks is postmaster, and stores, hotels, grain warehouses, and businesses began.?The citizens of the village of Hartford petitioned the County Commissioners for an election to be incorporated as the “Town of Hartford” in 1896. The election was held, and the town was incorporated August 1, 1896.

Recreation / Community Events

Jamboree Days are celebrated in June of each year. Jamboree Day usually consists of a parade, floats, kids games, kids tractor pull, food booths, craft booths and a street dance. Check with the local newspaper for more information.

The I-90 Speedway is located 2 miles west of Hartford.  Motorsport Fans will enjoy watching NMRA sprint cars and modified races on this 3/8 miles dirt track.

Hartford is only 5 minutes from Wall Lake for boating or fishing, and has an 18 hole golf course called Central Valley Golf Course. Hartford’s outdoor swimming pool, parks, tennis court, skateboard park, basketball court, softball diamonds, horse shoe pits, playground toys, and picnic shelters offer entertainment year round.

The Memorial to Veterans located at 201 N. Main Avenue.  Ernest Kroeger, a local resident is responsible for this memorial.
