In spite of its relatively small size, the city of Chamberlain offers an abundance of big-city attractions.  Located in Brule County, South Dakota, the city is home to the Akta Lakota Museum, which serves as a rich cultural center exhibiting artifacts and artistic creations of the Sioux Indians. Also located here is the South Dakota Hall of Fame, established in 1974 as a commemoration of the pioneers and leaders who have figured most prominently in the state’s settlement and development.

Among Chamberlain’s additional attractions is the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, dedicated to preserving the rich history of the duo’s travels through the Dakotas. This educational Mecca includes a variety of walking trails along the Missouri River, with historical trail markers indicating the routes taken by the explorers. The Tractor Museum in adjoining Kimball exhibits antique farm equipment used by the Old-West pioneers.

The close proximity of the Missouri River encourages many outdoor recreational pursuits, including scenic hiking, bird watching of the area’s 14 species, and plentiful fishing. The Chamberlain Dude Ranch is great for boating, camping, swimming, and fishing along the picturesque shoreline. At Barger Park, breathtaking views of the river stop foot travelers in their tracks, while an adjacent bike path accommodates those wishing to combine exercise with sightseeing. The American Creek Beach is a popular family destination, equipped with a playground and picnic shelters. At the Chamberlain Country Club, golfers can play the afternoon away at a charming course. The annual Lewis & Clark Sprint Triathlon attracts hundreds of local athletes.

Along Main Street in downtown Chamberlain, visitors and locals enjoy the abundant specialty shops, such as Downtown Antiques and the Quilt Shop, and diverse restaurants, like the local favorite Al’s Oasis (home of the five-cent cup of coffee and the famous lemon cream-cheese pie).
