Art Museum

The South Dakota Art Museum has been showcasing South Dakota’s local art and artists since 1970. Located in Brookings, South Dakota, the museum has a permanent collection, as well as changing exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and guided tours.  The museum has six galleries, a museum store, and a Kid’s Sensation Station.

Collections

The six galleries at the South Dakota Museum of Art include all kinds of art and artists, but visitors to South Dakota may want to focus on 2 collections in particular, the South Dakota collection, and the Native American collection.

The South Dakota collection, with over 600 works, includes photographs, paintings, sculptures, ceramics, prints and textiles by South Dakota artists.  Arthur Amiotte, Ada Caldwell, Charles Greener, Carol Hepper, Dale Lamphere, Signe Stuart and Dick Termes are all South Dakota artists whose works are featured in this collection.

Native American art is featured in another collection, with over 900 pieces representing the 19th and 20th century Native American culture. The collection includes breathtaking examples of Native American clothing, quillwork, moccasins, headdresses, bags, beadwork, pipes, pottery, baskets and tools from the North American Plains; pottery, jewelry and rugs from the southwest and baskets and carvings from the Northwest Coast of North America.

Museum Programs

The South Dakota Art Museum offers exciting and informative programs and workshops for the public, families, and children.  The Kid’s Sensation Station includes a puppet theatre, building blocks for aspiring architects, a geometric wall puzzle that inspires tactile exploration, coloring and art supplies to offer a creative outlet for future artists, a television and VCR to view some of the Museums’ video collection, and so much more!

The offerings at the South Dakota Museum of Art are changing all the time, so you’ll be sure to find something to pique your interest.
