Mushroom hike at Oahe Downstream

From the state Department of Game, Fish and Parks:

PIERRE, S.D. – Oahe Downstream Recreation Area, five miles north of Fort Pierre, will be the site of an opportunity this month to learn about South Dakota’s other gold – the tasty morel mushroom.

A walk in the popular state park, to learn more about morel mushrooms and rules for their harvest on public lands, will be held May 15, at 10 a.m. CDT.

“Be careful! Mushroom hunting has been known to become highly addictive, like an endless Easter egg hunt!” said Pat Buscher, Oahe Downstream Recreation Area Park Supervisor.

Guests will share recipes and tips for finding secret “hotspots.” Those participating in the walk should wear comfortable hiking shoes and long-sleeved shirts, and they should bring walking staffs, citrus or onion bags and insect repellent.

There is no charge for the morel mushroom program, although a state park entrance license is required at the Oahe Downstream Recreation Area. For more information, call the park office at 605-223-7722.
